Big Picture:
What I see a big-picture as well a future is that a sort of focus shift from systems and hardware/device centric perspective to interface and platform-independent access centric perspective.
A nicely done and a highly versatile GUI is a key to unlock the true complete potential of the already existing good internal system !
End of the day it is the INTERFACE to the system !!
